PHILOSOPHY

Family & Consumer Sciences offers students technical, interpretive and emancipative knowledge for them to make informed, rational and ethical judgments in light of personal and public welfare.

DEGREES OFFERED

The Department of Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) offers two Bachelors degree programmes.
  • Bachelor of Science (in Family and Consumer Sciences) - a four year programme covering natural sciences such as chemistry and microbiology; applied sciences such as food science and textile science, as well as production and social sciences.
  • Bachelor of Education (in Family & Consumer Sciences) - a two year programme designed for students who hold a secondary school teaching diploma in home economics.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students should meet the general admission status into Solusi University. In addition, they need at least one O-level pass in a science subject, and one O-level pass in a home economics subject.
Students transferring from technical colleges into the BSc programme may apply for credit by examination in production and design courses as approved by the department.

OBJECTIVES

The Department’s primary objective is to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and consumers. Thus it offers courses in child and family studies, clothing and textiles, consumer education, food and nutrition, as well as in housing and interior design.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Department strives to strengthen family as a basic unit of society, and to promote the development of individuals who are spiritually, physically, socially and psychologically responsible. This is taught by the integration of the principles of basic sciences, technology, humanities and arts, and relating them within a Christian framework to problems faced by individuals, families and communities. {mosimage}

CARRIER OPPORTUNITIES

Family & Consumer Scientists (home economists) find career opportunities in education, human services, government and public services, business and industry, health care, as well as in media services. They are also entrepreneurs running day-care centres, serving geriatrics, organising special occasions, offering counseling services and in interior design.
