DEGREES OFFERED

The Department of Mathematics, Environmental & Natural Sciences offers the following degrees:
  • Agribusiness - BSc
  • Agriculture - BSc
  • Agriculture - Minor
  • Biology - BEd
  • Biology - Minor
  • Chemistry - Minor
  • Environmental Health - BSc
  • Environmental Science - BEd
  • Environmental Science - BSc
  • Environmental Health/Science - Minor
  • Mathematics - BEd
  • Mathematics - BSc
  • Mathematics - BSc (Honours)
Major in Mathematics and Minors offered by the Department. Minors from other departments may be considered if the combination is workable but are generally discouraged as the combination requires more than the presently allocated three years to complete the degree requirements for graduation .
  • Mathematics – Minor
  • Physics – Minor
Those admitted from A- level zones take at least three years, while others take at least four, including the one-year Pre-University Programmes, to complete studies in these degrees. Those students writing to do a minor must not count a course for the minor they have in the major. The minor must be 20-25 credits of courses not counted for the major area. Alternative courses may be arranged by the department, on request, to meet the requirements, depending on the number of students writing the course. For Suggested Schedules please see the last section in this Department (For Bed schedules, please see the Humanities-Education section of this Bulletin).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

General University admission requirements for students from Zimbabwe and other countries where A-level system is used are: two A-level passes in addition to five O-level passes which must include English Language and Mathematics or a science subject. To study for a degree in mathematics students must have at least an A level pass in Mathematics, and preferably a Science for the second A-level subject. For a degree in Environmental Health or Environmental Science students must have at lease two A-Level passes or a National Diploma in Environmental Health and five passes with at least C in a Natural Science, or Geography or Mathematics or equivalent at O Level. For a degree in Agribusiness, students must have at least two A-level passes or a National Diploma in Agriculture and five passes with at least a C pass in a Natural Sciences, Agriculture or Mathematics or the equivalent at O-level.Students coming from countries whose systems are different will be considered if they qualify for entry into university in their home countries. However, they must have a relevant science bias in their high school certificate. If admitted, they can embark on the three-year full-time degree programme. Limited spaces are sometimes available for those who fail to qualify conventionally, but may qualify by writing a Mature Age Examination set by the Department. Contact the Registrar’s Office for more information. Prospective students from countries that require O-levels for university entry will be required to complete the Pre-University Programme during the first year (32 credits) at Solusi University (see the section for Pre-University Programme in this Bulletin

PHILOSOPHY

Down through the centuries science has revolutionalised the way of life from the primitive hunters and gathers to the highly industrialised and technological societies of today. These technological advances have been made possible by conscientious study of science. Not only does modern science seek to equip humanity with more and better tools to make good life even better, but also realises that people need to understand the basic principles from which these technological innovations are derived, and to use them appropriately. If new, and old, inventions are used without some basic understanding of the principles on which they function, the experience can be frustrating, and may even be catastrophic. The department firmly believes that the coherence of the principles of science and mathematics, the logical consistencies thereof, the power and versatility of these, point to the One who is omnipotent, omniscient, the only true and wise God, the Creator of the universe. Science is defined as “the attempt by man to explain nature.” Studied in the true spirit of “thirsting for true knowledge,” science and mathematics point the scholar to the source of all wisdom, power and indeed the beginning of all knowledge. It believes the human race in entrusted with the responsibility of taking care of the environment and the resources thereof. Therefore as true stewards, we advocate sustainable development in the use of our natural resources, conscious that they must benefit future generations after we are gone.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of Mathematics & Natural Sciences exists to develop and foster sound scientific and mathematical skills, primarily for the aspiring regional and constituent entrepreneurs and scientists in eastern and southern Africa, and others from elsewhere. The Department believes that true sciences emanate from, and points back to, God the Creator and the Redeemer of human beings.

OBJECTIVES

The Department of Mathematics, Environmental & Natural Sciences has the objective of producing highly competent scientists and mathematicians to serve on our regional and global constituencies in such areas as education, commerce, agriculture and industry. This is done in the spirit as commissioned to Solusi University by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and by the provisions of the service charter granted by the government of the Republic of Zimbabwe.Another objective is providing academic programme of sufficient rigour that the graduates of the programme can favourably compete with any other graduates from any other institution of higher learning on the job market. The Department also has the objective of providing an academic programme of sufficient rigour for the graduates of the programme to pursue higher degree studies at any other university of their choice, without suffering any prejudice.
